Brief
E Gucewicz Studios, a London atelier known for couture-grade experimental eyewear, wanted a collection that kept working after it was sold. 2,000 one-of-one frames, each able to prove what it was, who owned it, and give that owner a reason to keep picking it up. One constraint sat above everything else: it had to feel like luxury first. If the technology was the first thing you noticed, it had failed.
What We Built
A generative design system, and a connected layer hidden inside every frame.
— A rarity and trait map covering frame shape, material, hinge, lens engraving and accessories, driving a custom Blender script. 10,000+ digital variations generated, 2,000 selected as one-of-ones. — Materials held to atelier standard: Mazzucchelli double acetate, aluminium detailing, custom-plated hinges, ox horn on the rarest pieces. — A custom NTAG 424 chip housed in the temple arm, with a second tag in the case as an ownership backup. — An on-metal NFC casing, developed over weeks of lab testing after the aluminium started blocking the signal. Every frame was stress-tested for flex, moisture, impact and read consistency across devices. — A tap-to-browser experience showing authenticity, design metadata and unlockable drops and invites. No app, no wallet.
The brief said authentication. Testing said something else. People didn’t want the frame to prove itself. They wanted it to let them in. So we rebuilt the experience around access rather than verification, and that single finding is how every DEPARTMNT deployment has been designed since.
Outcome
Twelve months from sketch to working prototype. The frames were unveiled at Solana Breakpoint in Lisbon, November 2022, and drew industry validation and pre-order interest from the floor.
The collection did not go to full production. At atelier quality, 2,000 one-of-ones didn’t clear the cost of making them. What it left behind did: the on-metal casing and chip placement became the TapTech hardware standard, and the prototypes sit in the archive as the first connected product we ever built.
